Just Do It

by Melissa Allen, B.S., ACE
Certified personal trainer & fitness consultant

One sure way to overcome procrastination is to just do it, like the Nike campaign states. Its human nature to put things off, especially things that you’re not crazy about doing. So don’t think that there’s something wrong with you because you don’t get excited about working out or going to the gym. Instead, just know that you are not alone in feeling that way.

Even I have to admit that it can be easy to put off a workout in order to fit in something deemed equally important. In my case, 99% of the time I get it in, but often much later in the day than previously planned. For me, working on the computer often serves as justification for a late start, but I guess I should be happy that I make it there on a regular basis. Once I’m there, it feels really good to work out; it’s just that I often get so wrapped up in business-related computer work that I procrastinate.

One easy way to keep yourself on track so that you don’t miss workouts is to set a schedule that you adhere to on a regular basis. For example, if you work nine to five, Monday through Friday and you find yourself too tired to work out after work, then set a morning training schedule in which you begin your workout at 7 am and allow enough time to shower and get to work. Or maybe you have long lunches and can fit your workout in then. Whatever you choose, just be sure to stick with it. Now that doesn’t mean that you can’t train Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the morning, and Tuesday and Saturday in the afternoon. You can do whatever you want; the secret is to figure out what will work for you.

A second method may mean making a commitment to a training partner. That means you seek out a partner that, like you, is interested in training, and will hold you accountable. What you don’t want is a partner that is just looking for reasons to get out of exercise, so make sure you use good judgment. While most people first think of a spouse, girlfriend or boyfriend, don’t rule out a friend, co-worker, neighbor, or anyway else you think could make a good partner. If you are worried about offending someone by asking, just work exercise into a conversation and then gauge their reaction. You may be surprised to find that like you, they need someone to push them in the right direction.

A third possible solution is to tell everyone you know that you are starting an exercise program and you need their help in order to keep yourself accountable. You may find yourself working out for no other reason than to keep from being viewed as a quitter! You will probably be surprised to find out how many people feel the same way you do and are possibly looking for the same thing, although they may not have known it. Maybe you and your “accountability” friends can even call each other with motivational little messages to keep your momentum going. Get creative and figure out what works for you, that’s the key. If there’s a will, then there’s a way!
